If you’re anything like us, then this winter? Man, it got you good. But with the temperature slowly rising and the promise of sunshine, it’s time to crawl out from your cozy little hidey-hole and get back out there. Peel off those tracksuit pants, step away from your latest Netflix binge and head on up the road to Heathcote where we’ll sort you out with a good strong dose of nature, a splash of fine wine and a large helping of mouthwatering food.
Bursting at the seams
There’s a real buzz about the place when Budburst kicks off in Spring. The vines, having been dormant through winter, start to produce soft new shoots and the vineyards are full of promise for the season to come. It’s the perfect time to get out to the vineyards and find out what they’re all about. You’ll find some really passionate, dedicated people, each with their own unique approach. Not everyone’s open all the time so check out the great little guide in the ‘Who’s Open’ section of the website.
All the food
When visiting Heathcote it’s best advised that you bring your stretchy pants (you can thank us later).
To kick off the day you can’t go past a full cooked breakfast from Frank and Sandra at Fetching Treasures. After you’ve wandered the main street and are ready for lunch try Heathcote Wine Hub for a delicious café style feed in the courtyard. If you have little people with you they may enjoy a cuddle with the resident guinea pigs and chooks.
For dinner Heathcote Harvest is a MUST for the full paddock to plate indulgence. These guys breed free range Berkshire pigs (the Wagyu of pork) and lovingly produce their own small goods. Booking is essential.
Lay your weary head
You’re heading to shiraz heaven, so you don’t want to have to drive home right? Right. Heathcote has some amazing, unique accommodation options on offer. If you’re after five-star luxury Heathcote II is where it’s at with their opulent villas each having their own private walk in cellar. Experience loft style accommodation at Fetching Treasures in the heart of town, where your morning coffee (and that amazing breakfast I mentioned before) awaits at the café down-stairs. Or why not go off grid at Mt. Ida Eco Cabin?
Explore the O’Keefe Rail Trail
If you’ve packed your active wear (or even if you haven’t) burn off some of that local produce with a bike ride or a walk along the O’Keefe Rail Trail. Once the connecting train line from Heathcote to Bendigo, this popular cycling trail passes through some spectacular natural bushland and waterways. We recommend a trip out to the Lake Eppalock picnic ground, take your time and unwind amongst the gums.
Back to nature
Created by early gold-mining activities, Pink Cliffs is an Instagramer’s playground. The stunning hues of pink and cream make for a unique selfie and are a favourite with local artists. You’ll also be treated to a spot of birdwatching and plenty of wildflowers on the short stroll into the cliffs.
Wander along the babbling McIvor Creek down to the Valley of the Liquid Ambers where you can stop for a picnic or head on up to Viewing Rock, just mind the kangaroos.
Now that we’ve got you contemplating life after winter, visit www.heathcote.org.au for more information on booking your trip to Heathcote.
