Remnants of the gold mining past include the old powder magazine in the McIvor Range Reserve. It was built in 1864 to store gunpowder which was used in gold mining and quarrying. The fine stonework is a notable feature and it is considered a rare example of its type.
You can also fossick for gold in the surrounding bushlands for the chance to strike it rich! In Victoria, a prospector or fossicker requires a Miner's Right which is a permit to prospect for minerals on unreserved Crown Land or private land where the permission of the landowner has been granted. These can be purchased online at www.dpi.vic.gov.au for $26.90 and will be valid for two years.
