The historic Bendigo Post Office, built in 1887, is now home to the Bendigo Visitor Centre, the Post Office Gallery and the Living Arts Space.
The Post Office Gallery is a 'social history' museum, showcasing significant collections, artefacts and material that explore the broadest possible history of the region. The gallery features a number of exhibitions every year highlighting the Bendigo regions colourful past.
Description
The Post Office Gallery is the first of its kind in Australia: a unique venue with a changing annual exhibition program, ultimately allowing for the display and interpretation of a myriad of social history stories. This model ensures a continual exploration of the region's heritage while also ensuring operational sustainability, broad engagement, and strong and ongoing community involvement.
Significant collections, artefacts and material that explore the broadest possible history of the region are exhibited for the City of Greater Bendigo residents and visitors alike. It is through access to the community's collections that each Post Office Gallery exhibition is developed, with the many heritage groups and individual collectors of our community contributing to the content of each exhibition, often alongside loans from state and interstate institutions.
