Description
Bendigo Art Gallery recently experienced unprecedented growth due to the overwhelming success of exhibitions and programs conceived and delivered under the guidance of Director, Karen Quinlan. In line with its growing popularity as Australia’s largest and most impressive regional art museum, Bendigo Art Gallery launched its $8.5m re-development in March 2014; a new contemporary wing of galleries bordering Rosalind Park at the rear, designed by Karl Fender of Fender Katsalidis Architects. This expansion has seen an additional 600sqm gallery space, and forthcoming exhibition, The Body Beautiful in Ancient Greece, will be the first international exclusive to be displayed in this new wing.
Notwithstanding this exciting new expansion and direction, Bendigo Art Gallery is one of the oldest and largest regional galleries in Australia, established in 1887. Bendigo Art Gallery has developed a reputation for an international standard contemporary exhibition program that attracts approximately $20m in added value to the region’s economy (per annum).
Bendigo Art Gallery’s collection is extensive and varied. It includes painting, sculpture, ceramics, decorative arts, photography, works on paper, and contemporary Australian art, having acquired work by artists such as Patricia Piccinini, Bill Henson, Dale Frank, Jan Nelson, Fiona Hall, Emily Kame Kngwarreye, Kit Webster, Ben Armstrong.
Bendigo Art Gallery delivers a dynamic and varied suite of public programs and events alongside significant international and travelling exhibitions, attracting diverse audiences from across Victoria, and from metropolitan Melbourne.
